Training
Whether developing a facility maintenance program or setting up a thermography contracting business, training is essential. More and more companies require continuing professional development and a proven level of competence. As with many nondestructive testing techniques, training on the equipment and technology is critical so results are accurate and justifiable.
It is important that users of thermal imaging cameras have training in thermal imaging. Costly mistakes can occur if users are not trained to interpret their findings properly. Is there wet insulation? Is it reflection? Is it the wrong time of day for the inspection? Not enough load? Good trainers in infrared will provide training on imager use, interpretation of images, and include a section on safety while conducting infrared inspections. There are many hazardous environments and unknowns in any facility; safety is a key element of success.
Training is important, regardless of the difficulty of the application. There are several experienced infrared trainers operating in the UK and elsewhere. They usually conduct one-week training courses. There are generally three levels of qualification with level 2 being considered the minimum for managing a survey. In-house training can usually be arranged if there are several people to be trained at one location.
When choosing a training course it is important to select one that leads to the necessary certification. In the UK the new ISO 18436 accredited certification is set to be the most widely recognised in future years.
