Medical Section Guidelines

The UKTA Medical Section (MS) is a User Group within UKTA and operates within the UKTA constitution. We share the same objectives as our parent organisation (see article 3 of the constitution), but with the focus on medical thermography.

MS members are affiliate members of UKTA, and pay a discounted annual subscription rate. They have no voting rights at UKTA AGMs or EGMs, but one member of the MS sits on the UKTA Committee of Management to represent medical views. MS members receive none of the member benefits from the British Institute of Non-Destructive Testing to which full UKTA members are entitled. Instead, a dedicated medical thermography newsletter is published exclusively for MS members.

All MS members are automatically affiliate members of the European Association of Thermology (EAT, read its statutes here). UKTA members may subscribe to “Thermology International” (the official journal of the EAT) which the MS promotes and distributes within the UK.

The MS also promotes and assists in the organisation of regular scientific meetings in the UK, and is often in a position to support UKTA members by negotiating benefits such as reduced registration fees.

Membership of the MS is open to anyone with an interest in thermography in the field of medicine, biology or veterinary medicine, whether they are a practising thermographer or not. The MS is not an accreditation organisation, and membership does not imply endorsement by UKTA of the member’s fitness to practice clinical thermography. The constitution does, however, allow the UKTA Committee of Management to terminate the membership of any MS member who it deems to have frustrated the good standing or professionalism of the Association.

UKTA expects all practising medical thermographers to be appropriately accredited and registered commensurate with what UK law demands for their specific profession (see, for example www.gmc-uk.org and www.hpc-uk.org). The UKTA MS can advise members on appropriate courses and instructional material which will assist them in applying thermography appropriately in a clinical context.

Article 9 of the UKTA Constitution refers to use of the UKTA logo by members. With respect to Medical Section members:

  • Any member wishing to use the logo for their own use should ask Committee beforehand via the MS representative on committee

  • Use of the UKTA logo will not normally be approved for members’ use where the target audience is primarily patients. This reflects the Committee’s wish that use of the logo is not mistakenly construed by the general public as endorsement by UKTA of the member’s fitness to practice clinical thermography. UKTA has no powers granted by statute law to make such an endorsement.
